Synopsis
This volume is based on the more general information that was contained in J. C. Willis: A Dictionary of the Flowering Plants and Ferns (6th edition, 1931), but which had to be left out of more recent editions devoted to generic and family names.
The general information contained in the older editions of Willis has been greatly extended and brought up to date. The total number of entries has been more than doubled and many new features have been added. Listed are common names of plants throughout the world, where English is, or has been, spoken or used. Trade names and the names of economic or commercial plants products, including timbers, are included. Much of the information collected here is not readily available elsewhere.
The Dictionary will be useful not only to professional botanists, agriculturalists and horticulturalists, but also to those with an active interest in natural history or gardening.
