Reviews

This substantial and unusual volume is not an encyclopedic summary of names, dates, and images but a roughly chronological series of scholarly, sometimes provocative essays by specialists in various aspects of the medium's history. Contributors (identified only in the table of contents) are from France, Italy, Germany, Switzerland, England, and the United States. The chapters on photo-journalism, the illustrated press, and photography between the world wars are particularly informative, while high-quality illustrations from public and private collections worldwide convey photography's technical and aesthetic development and its ubiquity.
