Lattice theory evolved as part of algebra in the nineteenth century through the work of Boole, Peirce and Schröder, and in the first half of the twentieth century through the work of Dedekind, Birkhoff, Ore, von Neumann, Mac Lane, Wilcox, Dilworth, and others.
