The Interchange Placement Test is designed to enable teachers and program administrators to identify the optimal level of the Interchange series - INTRO, 1, 2, or 3 - for students entering programs where the series is used. The test booklet contains the written portion of the test - the listening, reading, and grammar sections - on photocopiable pages. The accompanying cassette can be used to conduct the listening section. The booklet also provides comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for administering and scoring the written test, and for conducting a short oral placement conversation that teachers may use to fine-tune their placement decisions.

'Dr Richards has created a very successful tool useful for not only instructing your students but also for inspiring them ... the immediate benefits of using Interchange show themselves very quickly: while the students learn the language in a way that is natural and interesting to them, the teacher learns more about his or her own teaching style (as well as new and effective ways to instruct an ESL class) ... a highly recommendable set of books to use.'
