Josef L. Altholz is a professor of history at the University of Minnesota, where he has taught since 1959. His field is the history of the British Isles, chiefly religious, in modern times; he has taught Irish history since 1979. His books include The Liberal Catholic Movement in England (1962), The Churches in the Nineteenth Century (1967), The Religious Press in Britain, 1760-1900 (1989), and Anatomy of a Controversy (1994).
