Book Description

This text, aimed at beginning engineering students, offers a broad-based introduction to engineering systems that incorporates material from mechanical, electrical, aerospace, and chemical engineering. Chapters cover linear graph theory, analysis of system dynamics organized by behavioral characteristics rather than by engineering subdisciplines, the Laplace transform, and feedback systems. Every chapter includes examples and exercise problems, drawn from real-world mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, chemical, and thermal systems.

About the Author

Philip D. Cha is a Professor in the Department of Engineering at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, California. He gained his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Michigan before working as a senior research engineer at the Ford Motor Company prior to joining Harvey Mudd College. In 2000, he received the Ralph R. Teetor Educational Award from the Society of Automotive Engineers as one of the top ten mechanical engineering educators in the US.

Clive L. Dym is Fletcher Jones Professor of Engineering Design and Director of the Center for Design Education at Harvey Mudd College. His primary interests are in engineering design and structural mechanics. He is the author of several books including Engineering Design: A Synthesis of Views (1994), Structural Modeling and Analysis (1997), Principles of Mathematical Modeling, Second Edition (2004) and Engineering Design: A Project Based Introduction, co-authored with Patrick Little (2008). He has published more than 90 refereed journal articles and is the founding editor of Artificial Intelligence for Engineering Design, Analysis and Manufacturing. He has served on the editorial boards of several other journals, including the ASME's Journal of Mechanical Design.
