9780521814935: The Decline of Christendom in Western Europe, 1750-2000

"Christendom" refers to a society where Christianity is essentially compulsory. Western Europe, however, has been gradually moving away from Christendom for more than two centuries towards a society where a great variety of religious and non-religious options are available and none is able to claim a privileged position. Written by historians, sociologists and theologians from six countries, and including chapters on most European countries, this study examines this process of increasing pluralism and its implication for the future.

Book Description:

'Christendom' means a society where Christianity is essentially compulsory. For more than two centuries in western Europe we have been gradually moving away from Christendom, towards a society where a huge variety of religious and non-religious options are available and none is able to claim a privileged position. This book, written by historians, sociologists and theologians from six countries, and including chapters on Britain, Ireland, France, Germany, Sweden and the Netherlands, shows where we are now, and how we got here, and offers some predictions for the future.

About the Author:

Hugh McLeod is Professor of Church History at the University of Birmingham. His previous publications include Piety and Poverty (1995) and Religion and the people of Western Europe (1997). He is president of the British branch of the International Church History Organisation. Werner Ustorf is Professor of Mission at the University of Birmingham. His first book was on the Kimbanguists in Zaire. He has also published books on missionaries in Toyo and Ghana, and on the relationship between German missions and the Nazis.

Book Description CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY PRESS, United Kingdom, 2005. Hardback. Book Condition: New. New.. Language: English . Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****. Christendom lasted for over a thousand years in Western Europe, and we are still living in its shadow. For over two centuries this social and religious order has been in decline. Enforced religious unity has given way to increasing pluralism, and since 1960 this process has spectacularly accelerated. In this 2003 book, historians, sociologists and theologians from six countries answer two central questions: what is the religious condition of Western Europe at the start of the twenty-first century, and how and why did Christendom decline? Beginning by overviewing the more recent situation, the authors then go back into the past, tracing the course of events in England, Ireland, France, Germany and the Netherlands, and showing how the fate of Christendom is reflected in changing attitudes to death and to technology, and in the evolution of religious language. They reveal a pattern more complex and ambiguous than many of the conventional narratives will admit. Bookseller Inventory # APC9780521814935
