Synopsis

Steven Finch provides 136 essays, each devoted to a mathematical constant or a class of constants, from the well known to the highly exotic. This book is helpful both to readers seeking information about a specific constant, and to readers who desire a panoramic view of all constants coming from a particular field, for example, combinatorial enumeration or geometric optimization. Unsolved problems appear virtually everywhere as well. This work represents an outstanding scholarly attempt to bring together all significant mathematical constants in one place.

Review

"Enormous fun, and you don't even have to follow any difficult arguments; a treasure-trove for the mathematical beachcomber."
The Mathematical Gazette

"I think all mathematicians should own this book...there are sections where the author conveys admirably his excitement over some unexpected and beautiful sequence of ideas. I pay the author the earnest compliment of stating that nearly every page in the book is an adventure."
The Mathematical Intelligencer

"Very accessible...The author's clear and engaging style makes the book a pleasure to read."
MAA Reviews

"This is a very useful book...The emphasis is on the mathematical origin of the constants and their interrelationships. The aim is always to be clear and complete, to motivate why a particular constant or idea is important, and to indicate exactly where in the literature one should look for rigorous proofs and further elaboration. This book should be in each mathematical library."
Monatshefte für Mathematik

"I consider this book to be an essential component of all mathematical libraries. I have placed it on my 'within the grasp' shelf and have strongly recommended to the college library that it be added to the reference collection."

First Edition (1953) ; Second Printing (1960) . Paperback: self-wraps. Douglas Geoffrey Northcott, FRS (1916 2005) was a British mathematician who was best known for his work on Ideal Theory. Ideal theory is important not only for the intrinsic interest and purity of its logical structure but because it is a necessary tool in many branches of mathematics. In this introduction to the modern theory of ideals, Professor Northcott assumes a sound background of mathematical theory but no previous knowledge of modern algebra. After a discussion of elementary ring theory, he deals with the properties of Noetherian rings and the algebraic and analytical theories of local rings. In order to give some idea of deeper applications of this theory the author has woven into the connected algebraic theory those results which play outstanding roles in the geometric applications. He was educated in London, then at Christ's Hospital and St John's College, Cambridge, where he started research under the supervision of G. H. Hardy. After service in the Second World War, he returned to Cambridge, where he published his dissertation "Abstract Tauberian theorems with applications to power series and Hilbert series". He then turned to algebra under the influence of Emil Artin, whom he had met while visiting Princeton University. He became a Research Fellow of St John's College in 1948. In 1949, he proved an important result in the theory of heights, namely that there are only finitely many algebraic numbers of bounded degree and bounded height. In analogy to this result, a set of algebraic numbers is said to satisfy the Northcott property if there are only finitely many elements of bounded height. In 1952, he moved to the Town Trust Chair of Pure Mathematics at Sheffield University. He remained at Sheffield until his retirement in 1982, also serving as Head of Department and Dean of Pure Science. In 1954, Northcott and David Rees introduced in a joint paper, the Northcott-Rees theory of reductions and integral closures, which has subsequently been influential in commutative algebra. Northcott was awarded the London Mathematical Society Junior Berwick Prize in 1953. He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society in 1961. ; Cambridge Tracts in Mathematics & Mathematical Physics; Vol. 42; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; viii, 109 pages. Seller Inventory # 59224
