In order to describe an American civic ideal for those who enjoy membership in the state and the obligations entailed, this study traces its development in American history. Starting from the republicanism of pre-1865, the book follows the widening of the franchise following post-1865 economic development. It characterizes the twentieth century by the increase and subsequent decline of consumerism, and by the development, in later years, of the "economic conscience". The volume's analysis of civic trends in America highlights many of the inherent ideals of American life.

Good Citizenship in America describes a civic ideal of who enjoys membership in the state and what obligations that entails, and traces its history in America. Starting from the republicanism of pre 1865, the book follows the widening of the franchise following post 1865 economic development. The 20th century is characterized by the increase and subsequent decline of consumerism, and by the development, in later years, of the "economic conscience". This is an easily accessible analysis of civic trends in America, and one that highlights much of what is decent in American life.
"[David Ricci] often brings some interesting discussion and useful distinctions for concepts[...]Ricci's original approach clearly links citizenship studies with early American history[...]this book will be useful for undergraduate students in these two disciplines."
