John Hunter Kerr emigrated to Port Phillip from Scotland in 1839. He took up land, became a successful pastoralist and a prominent citizen of Melbourne. The story of the Kerrs' life on the land and their fluctuating fortunes was long thought to have been written by Kerr. Recent research, however, suggests that much of the book was written by his wife.
