The not-too-ponderous Moscow nights and days of Victor Pavlov, ne Sgt. Everton of USAF, a survivor, with bellicose Captain White, of a sleuthing Constellation's crash over Russia. Both men consent to defect when the alternatives point to very dead ends: the Captain because he is a coward; Everton because he has a brain in his easygoing head. Everton whiles away the time with a job and a pad in a house of turncoat misfits under the name of Victor Pavlov, another grateful gilt from the Russian government. He is also visited by lady agents and falls heavily for unwilling spy Nina who agrees to try to escape with him. They do, hijack-fashion, to Finland. As for Captain White, he had probably committed suicide being a man of paltry inner resources. When there is action, it's fast and spare; the world-weary Russian security bureaucrats are amusing and likable; and Everton's Benchleyish blend of modesty and cynicism is tremendously appealing. Comes in clear on all frequencies.
