The Amos 'n' Andy show was the most successful and most controversial radio and TV program ever produced about black people. From its inception in 1928 when two white men, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll wrote, produced, and played the main characters, the program was attacked as being demeaning to blacks in characterizing them as lazy, shiftless, and objects of humorous scorn. The authors of this study are ambivalent in much of their commentary, pointing out that the long-running series was extraordinarily popular among all races well into the 1950s. At that point new racial attitudes spelled the end of Amos 'n' Andy as less stereotyped and more sophisticated shows such as I Spy and The Bill Cosby Show portrayed blacks more realistically.
