From Library Journal:
Painter Cassatt and dancer Duncan, two turn-of-the-century artists of great accomplishment never met. They shared little in terms of background, lifestyle, or artistic concerns, though both spent much of their lives in Europe, and each took a trip to Egypt. Challenging the traditional approach to biography--"rigid placement of fact in time . . . with a proper beginning and middle and end"--Dillon's dual biography jumbles and juxtaposes events in the two women's lives in the hope of revealing more about them. The concept is more interesting than the book. Dillon says very little about their work; since both were extremely committed, her lack of documentation on specific paintings and dances trivializes their contributions. There are numerous personal pronouncements, asides, and analytical remarks on the art of biography sprinkled throughout the text. This book will have a limited audience. Not recommended.
