Fenton P. Smith and Gerald Grubbs, the Determined Detectives, investigate a case of construction bidding which has made Fenton's mother look like she's being disloyal to her firm

Grade 3-5 Fenton P. Smith and Gerald Grubbs return in their second mystery. Merger on the Orient Expressway is an important case because Fenton's mother is both the crime victim and the chief suspect. Mrs. Smith works for a construction company that has been regularly underbid by a rival company. Sure that her boss suspects her of selling out to the enemy, Mrs. Smith takes some time off from work, leaving the way open to the undercover investigation of her son the amateur sleuth. Disguised as typewriter repairmen, the boys infiltrate the office and discover the sneaky way that Mrs. Smith's secret bids are being smuggled out to the rival company. Of course, everyone knows that the boys could never fool anyone into believing that they are really adults who have come to the office to repair equipment. Christian has geared her light, easy-reading mystery for humor and clever plotting rather than realism. She has succeeded. Drew Stevenson, Tompkins County Public Library, Ithaca, N.Y.
