Grade 3-5 In this, the fourth book about Fenton P. Smith and Gerald Grubbs, the two boys find a cat whose collar contains the message ``Help me, please!'' With a little assistance from Mae Donna Dockstadter, a young ``know-it-all'' classmate (who seems to the boys to show up everywhere), Fen ton and Gerald solve the case and end up with a few more surprises from The Maltese Feline. As in most books in this series, Fenton and Gerald dress up like and pass for adultsin this story to try to gain admittance into the Col linbacher mansion. Readers seem to let these unrealistic scenes pass and enjoy the antics of the two boys. The plot is brief, yet evenly paced. Chris tian does a fine job of dropping easily- understood clues for young detective fans. This mystery will appeal to read ers who may have also enjoyed Chris tian's ``Sebastian (Super Sleuth)'' se ries (Macmillan). Blair Christolon, Prince William Library, Manassas, Va.
