Grade 3-5 Eunice discovers that she has a new, secret friend when she responds to a note that she finds in a library book, recommending another science fiction book that she might like. She writes back to her mysterious "Cosmic Cousin" to suggest a favorite book of her own, signing the note "Solar Soulmate." The two anonymous friends continue to correspond with each other, recommending different books and evading the eagle eye of Mrs. Rindfuss, the librarian, until Eunice puzzles out the identity of her secret pen pal. Readers will probably guess who's writing the enigmatic notes long before Eunice does, but they'll still enjoy her energetic search. The plot moves quickly, and characters are believable, if not particularily unique. Hayashi goes out of her way to fight gender stereotypes of readers' subject preferences by including female characters who love science and science fiction and a boy who, although reluctant to admit it, is enthralled with Little Women. Too bad she spoils it all with a stereotyped librarian, whose "Be Quiet" signs and hostile disposition will make most librarians cringe. Cathryn A. Camper, Minneapolis Public Library
