Grade 3-7-- A short, clever story of the life of a tomcat. Felis can talk, but unfortunately his humans cannot always understand him. He's willing to give them the benefit of his company and friendship, although he doesn't want to spoil them with too much affection. Johansen shows readers every aspect of a cat's busy life, including his love life when a special she-cat lures him with her scent. He leaves home to stay with this cat until she loses her appeal, and is luckily found by his humans (he feels he finds them) in the park. Once home, he is neutered to keep him in line, but Felis remains his own cat and settles into a comfortable friendship with the new she-cat in town. This has neither the political animal rights message of A. N. Wilson's Stray (Orchard, 1989) or the moralizing tone of Bill Wallace's Totally Disgusting (Holiday, 1991). Instead, it looks with gentle humor on this cat's view of the world. The detailed black-and-white line drawings realistically depict every expression and pose imaginable (including spraying his territory and relieving himself in the house). They are interwoven cleverly with the text, sometimes in full- or double-page spreads, and again in small margin illustrations with cats peering down on the text or pouncing off the page. A humorous romp into the feline mind. --Yvonne Frey, Peoria Public Schools, IL
