Grade 2-3-- In this sequel to Desperate for a Dog (Dutton, 1989), two sisters pick a puppy and the family problems begin. The puppy is an escape artist, chews everything she can find, and frightens the animals and people in the neighborhood. The biggest problem, however, is deciding on a name for her. Everyone in the family has a vote, but when the puppy returns after running away, it is clear that she has chosen her own name. This clearly written beginning chapter book is enhanced by black-and-white sketches of family members and escapades. While it is enjoyable, Zion's Harry and the Lady Next Door (Harper, 1960), Rylant's "Henry and Mudge" series (Bradbury), and Barbara Anne Porte's Harry's Dog (Greenwillow, 1983) better communicate the reciprocal friendship between child and pet and explore more enticing adventures. --Renee Blumenkrantz, Davis Community Library, Bethesda, MD
