A bright-eyed, bobtailed, floppy-eared puppy has a splendid time burrowing in the trash can, jumping in the coal bucket, pulling down the tablecloth, and ripping up a cushion?until the exasperated farmer's wife sends him outdoors. Wistfully and hopefully, he approaches the rooster, the ducklings, the marmalade cat, and the shire horse, asking them to play, but they all think themselves too grand to associate with him. Then, unexpectedly, an equally filthy piglet delights in rolling in the mud with him, and they have a fine time. Just as the farmer's wife comes out to bathe him, the pup falls into the pond, emerges clean, and happily curls up in his basket to dream about his busy day. The sparkling text is perfectly paired with softly realistic, beautifully crafted watercolors in both double-page spreads and quarter-page vignettes.
