From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6-- A general history of the nation's capital, followed by brief, specific accounts of the building of the Capitol, the White House, Mount Vernon, and other selected monuments, including facts about their architects and designs, as well as important people and events associated with each. While Hoig focuses mainly on the late 18th and 19th centuries, the sections on the national monuments and memorials include more contemporary coverage, such as the Vietnam Memorial and the updating of the White House. The book, illustrated with old prints and photographs, is interesting but does not include enough information for reports. It would best be used as an introduction to the city or as supplemental material to Leonard Everett Fisher's The White House (Holiday, 1989). --Margaret C. Howell, West Springfield Elementary School, VA
