Describes the animals of the world's basic habitats (grasslands, deserts, woodlands, rain forests, cold regions) and how "better" zoos in this country are trying to exhibit the animals in environments like their natural ones

From School Library Journal:
Grade 4-6-- Curtis discusses old zoos, what makes new ones new, and the role played by the American Association of Zoological Parks and Aquariums (AAZPA). She devotes a chapter each to grasslands and savannas, deserts, woodlands, rain forests, and tundras and taigas in terms of the habitat's general characteristics. She also introduces a variety of creatures that might be seen in a natural setting in a new zoo--from fennec foxes to sun bears, snowy owls to hyacinth macaws, ring-tailed lemurs to tokay geckos. Good quality, full-color photos accompany basic information about each animal. Also included is a checklist of things to look for in determining a wildlife facility's quality, such as cleanliness of its water and whether the animals are placed in their proper social groupings. Strongly stated throughout is the author's disapproval of roadside zoos, animal auctions, hunting ranches, and old-style zoos with rundown and antiquated facilities. She gives examples of abusive treatment and pointedly omits the San Francisco Zoo and the San Diego Wild Animal Park from her appended list of "Good Zoos to Visit." Her stance is firm and uncompromising. While her animal rights messages can be a bit obtrusive and her text leaves readers wanting to know more about the animals, this does explain what new zoos are doing and why. Unlike Johnston's Windows on Wildlife (Morrow, 1990), which deals with a specific place, this general presentation gives the broad picture, and leaves children ready to do further reading. --Patricia Manning, Eastchester Public Library, NY
