Reviews

Grade 3-5-The title alone should entice dog lovers to investigate this book further. However, while the writing is fluid and informative, the organization is questionable. The text is divided into two-page spreads on individual members of the canine family, but animals of one group, such as foxes, are not placed together. The section on the red wolf begins, "A red wolf is not a gray wolf with a red tinge to its coat," and goes on to state that it "...shares many traits with its two closest relatives, the gray wolf and the coyote." Information on the gray wolf, however, appears seven chapters earlier. High-quality full-color photographs with thought-provoking captions ("Can your dog sniff out underground mice?," "Can your dog dig a den for itself?") link the characteristics of domestic dogs with those of their wild relatives. While not as comprehensive as Juliet Clutton-Brock's Dog (Knopf, 1991), this book presents fascinating information that is hard to find elsewhere.
