Written with both positive affection and critical distance, this is as much a study of the 20th-century creators of the preserved/created 18th-century village of Deerfield, Massachusetts, as it is of the village itself. The evolving conception of Frank Boyden, the headmaster of Deerfield Academy, and of Helen and Henry Flynt, Deerfield is an idealized vision of early America from 1700 to 1820 that has been slowly realized since the 1930s. Two-thirds of the accessible text deals with the dozen house museums that constitute public Historic Deerfield. Interesting in itself and as a study of American collecting, this book is recommended for general collections.
