Grade 8 Up --This recently updated work is one of the best overviews of El Salvador for this age group. Written for an older audience than El Salvador: Beauty Among the Ashes (Dillon, 1986) by Faith Adams and less formulaic than Haverstock's El Savador . . . in Pictures (Lerner, 1987), it provides a balanced picture of a country that remains constantly in the news. Cheney provides a brief but comprehensive history as background for a socioeconomic analysis of the current dilemma, which he suggests may be caused in part by an economically weakened middle-class. The black-and-white photos do not do justice to Cheney's critical writing; they contain nothing original and could have been compiled from any major newspaper during the course of a week's news.
