From School Library Journal

Grade 10 Up-- Seldom does a revised edition represent so great an improvement over the original as does this one. The Stwertkas' initial volume (Watts, 1982; o.p.) presented a basic introduction to the facts in fairly stilted language, requiring readers to have some background in biology in order to understand it. This edition is not only fully updated with recent developments in the field, but is also much better written. The organization is clearer, and the language far more accessible. Best of all, it does not require as much scientific background to understand the ideas. There are several other books that cover the basic concepts, especially the moral/political issues, just as well or better, but without the updated coverage. The Facklams' From Cell to Clone (HBJ, 1979) and The Silversteins' The Genetics Explosion (Four Winds, 1980) are both even better written, and give more detail, while Sylvia Engdahl's Tool for Tomorrow ( Atheneum, 1979; o.p.) gives more depth on the medical/ethical issues. However, as a brief, up-to-date outline, the Stwertkas' book will fit well into most collections. --Jonathan Betz-Zall, Sno-Isle Regional Library System, Marysville, WA
