Kindergarten-Grade 2-- Double-page, full-color illustrations highlight this months-of-the-year poem taken from Coleridge's Pretty Lessons in Verse , first published in 1834. Each month has a two-line rhyme ("Chill December brings the sleet,/Blazing fire and Christmas treat."), with an appropriate illustration depicting a girl and boy participating in seasonal activities. In addition, each right-hand page has a lift-the-flap, revealing a family of mice going about their seasonal celebrations and chores. The pastel illustrations, each bordered in symmetrical tiny box-pictures, are appealing and fit the verses perfectly. The mice family's goings-on under each flap add interest and are drawn with careful attention to verse-enhancing detail. This is not Sendak's Chicken Soup with Rice (Harper, 1962), but is a pleasant enough description of the seasonal changes brought by the turn of the calendar. --Barbara S.
