From School Library Journal:
PreSchool-Grade 1-- This picture-book variation of a familiar theme doesn't quite succeed. Prince Lachlan, l'enfant terrible , makes his presence felt in the Kingdom of Hill. Noise, confusion, and catastrophe are his constant companions. His long-suffering, indulgent parents fall into the permissive category, but the prince is usually within earshot, or at least slingshot range. His behavior is put to good use when the Great One, a nefarious villian, schemes to take over the throne. Apparently the Great One has no tolerance for noisy, disruptive children, because a visit from Prince Lachlan sends him packing. This strains credibility: a little noise would hardly be enough to make this scoundrel abandon his ill-gotten treasures. James' double-page pen-and-ink and watercolor paintings are exuberant and entertaining. The pictures convey energy without being frenetic, and the artist's use of a rich color palette and accents of crayonlike texture adds interest. The simple text has a pleasing cadence, and is cleverly interspersed with small choruses of sounds. However, the lack of tension in the climax and the story's bland resolution leave readers feeling cheated. --Corinne Camarata, Port Washington Public Library, NY

From Publishers Weekly:
This rambunctious royal redhead of the Kingdom of Hill resembles a kilt-wearing human tornado. Prince Lachlan's boisterous good spirits frequently shatter the castle's peace (and possessions), and sorely try his parents' patience. When the royal family learns, however, that the ogreish Great One has designs on the throne, it's Lachlan who saves the day. The frequent sound effects highlighting this caper are sure to delight: " Shatter went the window. Tinkle went the glass." Chalk up another delectable romp for Australian author Hilton ( Dirty Dave ), whose tongue-in-cheek text is set off splendidly by James's puckish illustrations, chock-full of colorful, unexpected details. Ages 3-6.
