PreSchool-Grade 2--Starring Francine and Dave can be appreciated as both a picture book and as a good introduction to the basic elements of play production. Through large colorful illustrations and a minimum of dialogue, two children "star" in three short food-related plays. In the first play, they decide to make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the first time. The second play shows what these two resourceful friends do when they make too much lemonade. The last play concerns the fair division of a delicious chocolate cake. Although these plots are fairly basic, the plays convey a lively sense of humor and will certainly appeal to young children. The cartoon-like chalk and ink illustrations effectively complement the action of each play. A brief glossary further explains some of the key ingredients to theatre. --Denise A.
