From School Library Journal:
ea. vol: illus. photogs. bibliog. glossary. index. (Computer-Awareness First Bks.). CIP. Watts. Mar. 1986. PLB $9.40. Grade 5-8How to Create Adventure Games is a good introduction. The process of creating an adventure game is explained in three stages: planning, design and programming. Lampton provides a program, using the Microsoft version of BASIC. It is a useful example to follow and is compatible with Apple, Commodore, IBM and Radio Shack microcomputers. Graphics are not included in the program, probably because of the differences among the different computer systems. Prospective adventure-game developers will find this book a valuable resource to use with Rodgers' Creating a Database: Undersea Adventure (Gloucester Pr, 1985). The information in How to Create Computer Games is accurate. The most useful section describes the importance of setting up a data structure that is well organized when planning the development of games. However, there are many books available on this topic, and this one will not replace Fred D'Ignazio's Invent Your Own Computer Games (Watts, 1983). Computer Crime is an excellent overview of the legal aspects of using computer software and hardware. Lampton clearly explains the current situation faced by companies with large computer systems and by the government and their efforts to keep hackers from gaining access to the systems. Other topics covered relate to copyright and patent information as it relates to the copying of software and in licensing use of computer chips. SWZ
