From School Library Journal:
Grade 5-7 Gallant traces the development of mammal species during the Cenozoic era. Both geological and biological history is explained alongside the evolution of mammals, thus providing important and relevant contextual information. However, there is so much information that readers will need to have some familiarity with the subject in order to find this volume accessible. The concept of evolution is explained by inference, not by a clearly stated definition and discussion. Certain terms (e.g., mollusk, marsupial) are defined neither in the text nor in the brief glossary. Species after species is introduced but rarely described. The text is divided into four chapters (presenting background information, geologic periods, and the development of Man), and is supplemented by black-and-white reproductions from natural history museum illustrations and dioramas. A heavily pro-science appendix discusses the controversy between Creationism and Evolution. Cramped typeface and page design do little to help readers pause to digest the sophisticated information being presented, and the index is not thorough. Cathy Wood, Shelburne Museum, Vt.
