Grade 5-8 An attractive, information-filled book full of colorful photographs, maps, graphics, and artwork. Coverage includes land and population, home and leisure, economy and trade, and government and world role; for each of these major sections, there is a two-page presentation of brief facts, supported by maps and excellent graphs. Coverage is superficial but well-organized in a clear, concise writing style. This is not intended to be a historical treatment of Japan; ancient history is not covered at all and modern history (from 1853 on) is treated in two very brief pages. This is approachable, useful material for the report needs of young students. Greene's Japan (Childrens, 1983) and Stefoff's Japan (Chelsea House, 1988) are better for intermediate students.
