Grade 1-3-- An introduction to genetics that presents a simple but accurate overview of the science of heredity. Mendel's experiments are reviewed, followed by a discussion of dominant and recessive alleles. An explanation of chromosomes and DNA and some mention of mutations complete the text. The content is minimal, straightforward, and easy to follow. Terminology is italicized and defined within the text as well as in the short glossary. Illustrations are pleasant, softly colored drawings. Half of them are of people, animals, or Mendel's pea plants; the other half are depictions of cells, chromosomes, etc. Rather than captions, two birds and a cat comment in balloon dialogue on the content of the illustrations. Some of these comments relate facts; others merely say, "Wow" or "I didn't know that." While there has been a recent proliferation of genetics books for children, this is the best one for primary graders. --Denise L. Moll, Lone Pine Elementary School, West Bloomfield, MI
