From School Library Journal:
Grade 9 Up-- Steeped in a solid understanding of the history of Nicaragua and its relationship with the U. S., Jenkins offers a book that is a cut above the rest in its ability to couple a lucid presentation of facts with thoughtful analysis. The book is divided into 11 chapters; they give the history of the inexorable ties between Nicaragua and the U. S. from William Walker and the manifest destiny of 1848 up until the Bush and Ortega administrations of 1989. The last six chapters deal with the Sandinistas and the Contras. Readers see the conflicts that are ever evident in Nicaragua--the Nicaraguans' fear of a U. S. invasion, the noncommunists' fear of total suppression, the church's internal polarization between the Pope and Archbishop Obando, and "Liberation Theology" and the masses. This is a thought-provoking book that is honest and analytical but not biased. Readers will emerge with a better understanding of the terms by which the U. S. has defined the Monroe Doctrine and the inherent struggle for identity of all of the Central American nations. Black-and-white photographs document the text, but are not particularly outstanding. A book that rings with the reality of first-hand knowledge and thoughtful writing. --Steve Matthews, Foxcroft School, Middleburg, VA
