Reviews

Grade 4-6-- A brief history of space flight leads into enough description of the individual shuttle craft to let readers begin to see them as individual craft, and then on to plans and hopes for the future. This volume is current enough to have photos of the Challenger replacement shuttle, Endeavor , under construction, but not to confirm the retrieval of the Long Duration Exposure Facility, although a picture of the LDEF when it was placed in orbit in 1980 is included. This revision of the 1981 edition is thoroughly updated, and all of the previous edition's black - and-white photos have been replaced with color. However, the most striking difference between the two books is length. While they have identical dimensions and page count, the revised edition combines larger print, more pictures, and eight pages of front matter into the page total, leaving space for only half the text of the original. This encourages a brevity that sometimes borders on the cryptic, particularly when the text touches on science or engineering beyond Fichter's ken. Readers are expected to have a basic understanding of shuttle design and terminology; those with this background will appreciate the greater than usual attention given to individual shuttle flight. --Margaret Chatham, formerly at Smithtown Library, NY
