Grade 4-6-- Eye-catching, colorful illustrations and full-color photographs highlight every page in these overviews of a wide variety of endangered and extinct species. In addition to discussions of such rare animals as the giant panda, Steele presents many unfamiliar creatures. Fossil evidence of the various types of animals is included along with a brief explanation of how modern insects, fish, amphibians, and mammals have evolved. Unfortunately, the organization in all four texts is very choppy, with little transition between sections. Young readers will find it difficult to follow the author's main point--that while many creatures became extinct before humans appeared, many more have vanished in a relatively short period of time due to humanity's destructive impact on the environment. Animals in Danger (National Geographic Society, 1978) by Peggy Winston and Endangered Animals (Childrens, 1984) by Lynn Stone are much broader in scope and for a slightly younger audience. Endangered Animals (National Wildlife Federation, 1989) offers information about pandas, cheetahs, and other well-known endangered species. --Barbara B.
