Text: English, French, German, Italian, Latin, Spanish
Gr 10-12-Charles identifies the four basics of learning a foreign language (listening and comprehension, speaking, writing, and reading) and encourages young people to ``develop an attitude that you are going to make yourself understood, somehow, in spite of a lack of vocabulary or grammatical mistakes.'' The text simply and logically presents the many aspects of studying another language, including the related culture and body language. The author explains the use of formulas and grids to help organize information mentally and stresses the importance of thinking of each language as a separate entity rather than attempting to compare it to English. Examples presented are usually in French, Italian, Spanish, or German, but elements of other languages are also discussed. Serious students will find this book informative, useful, and relatively easy to understand.-Dona Weisman, Northeast Texas Library System, Garland
