Grade 7 Up?Cockcroft covers a wide range of areas in which Latinos have contributed to the making of the U.S., from mining and agriculture to industry and entertainment. The author gives a detailed history of the leadership roles they assumed in unions in the fight for eight-hour days; wages; and equality regardless of gender, race, or nationality. In addition, he describes their struggle to overcome racism and discrimination in seeking better work, health care, housing, and education. Although the writing is articulate, Cockcroft's one-dimensional representation of Latinos takes away from the impact of their story. His coverage of their history, contributions, and struggles is extensive, but he does not delve into the stark realities Latino immigrants faced before leaving their homelands. Overall, however, the book is a well-researched and well-indexed resource for reports. A comprehensive list of books and videos is included.?Maria Redburn, Collier County Public Library, Immokalee, FL

Gr. 8^-12. Part of the fine Hispanic Experience in the Americas series, which includes Cockcroft's Hispanic Struggle for Social Justice and Garza's Latinas , this is an in-depth history by a well-known scholar in the field. Cockcroft calls for an end to the present scapegoating of immigrants and shows the vital role that Mexican Americans, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Cubans, Central Americans, and South Americans have played in the building of this country, from farmworkers and health-care providers to artists and civil rights activists. There's a lot of information here, with some overlap between this book and others in the series, but everything is well documented in chapter notes, and occasional full-page black-and-white documentary photos break up the dull design. Students researching U.S. history and immigration issues will be caught by Cockcroft's knowledge and commitment and by his call for "economic democracy." Hazel Rochman
