Grade 4-7 Despite their delicate appearance, these sea-dwelling invertebrates are effective predators. A succinct text briefly describes the characteristics common to all sea jellies; explains the principles of scientific classification; identifies the three classes of the cnidaria phylum; profiles 14 different species; and discusses the gradual destruction of coral reefs worldwide and what is being done to save them. The majority of the book is devoted to the profiles of species, each of which is the focus of a separate, double-page section. The lion's mane jellyfish, moon jelly, Portuguese man-of-war, phosphorescent sea pen, fire coral, and starlet sea anemone are among the featured creatures. In most, a page of text alternates with a clear, full-color photograph. A boxed heading identifies the family to which it belongs, its common and scientific names, and average size. Besides its clearly written and well-organized text, Sea Jellies also boasts some excellent photography. Particularly good is the shot of a sea wasp with its lethal, threadlike tentacles swirling around its gossamer body. While Leighton Taylor's Jellyfish (Lerner, 1998) and Rebecca Stefoff's Jellyfish (Benchmark, 1997) are good introductions to the subject, Sharth's book describes the characteristics of a wider variety of sea jellies in more detail and will help fill a gap in natural-history sections. -Karey Wehner, formerly at San Francisco Public Library
