Grade 3-5-This overview of the history of ASL covers all of the high points from the pioneering efforts of Abbe de L'upee in the 18th century to today's cochlear implants. Although the text isn't exciting, Kent does present the manual communication versus speech debate in a fairly lively manner, even though her bias is clearly pro-sign language. Rather than presenting various signs or the manual alphabet, the author explores the development of different modes of signing, including finger spelling, cued speech, and total communication (both speech and signs). The photos are merely decorative. A quibble: The author refers to "Pidgeon Signed English," which of course should be "Pidgin Signed English."-Christine A.
