Reviews

Beginning readers with an interest in all things equestrian will enjoy this small, brightly illustrated title. The format pairs simple sentences, well tuned to a new reader’s vocabulary and printed in large type, with full-page color photographs of horses and young multicultural riders. Each page describes a different aspect of horse care, behavior, and riding, and basic terms, such as tack, appear in bold in the body of the text and then are further defined in the appended glossary. Extra features, such as a double-page labeled diagram of a horse’s body and an illustrated section that identifies a few horse breeds, add more interest. Part of the Sports Talk series, a subset of the Scholastic News Nonfiction Readers series, this will be an easy sell to animal lovers who are just gaining confidence as independent readers.
