Grade 2-4-- These volumes combine a well-chosen selection of full-color photographs and paintings with brief boldface texts and appended pages of miscellaneous facts. Rockets and Satellites includes not only the expected survey of satellite and rocket types, but also a topical discussion of "space junk" as well as a look at the Hubble Space Telescope--although the latter's incompetent manufacture is not mentioned. Space Shuttles is pleasantly specific about the work these craft are designed for, and profiles the shuttles built or planned by other countries, with special reference to the Soviet Buran . Barrett salts the texts' generalities with names and dates, and the illustrations are nearly all half-page or larger. Although there are no bibliographies or address lists, these will appeal as much to young researchers as to casual browsers. --John Peters, New York Public Library
