Grade 4-6. Beginning with the arrival of Europeans in the 15th century, these titles trace the emigration of people from Africa and the Indian subcontinent. Africa examines the origins of slavery and its subsequent expansion by Europeans, leading to the forced emigration of millions of Africans to colonies in the West Indies and the Americas. The book details the slaves' abominable living conditions, the types of labor they were forced to perform, and their mistreatment and degradation at the hands of their masters. Indian Subcontinent describes the lives of the people who were taken to Mauritius and Bourbon as slaves, and to the British colonies as indentured laborers. Both titles cover immigration to Britain and other countries in the 19th and 20th centuries. Also discussed are the stigmas attached to emigrants in foreign lands and the ways some individuals overcame them to achieve prominence. Important issues such as the Pan-African movement by Africans and the ill treatment and expulsion of Indians by the Ugandan, Fijian, and Burmese governments are also included. The books are clearly written but have occasional lapses in syntax (in Africa, the text reads, "The European settlers soon felt American and declared their independence from Britain in 1776"). With well-designed formats, they feature an appealing combination of color and black-and-white photographs and period etchings on almost every page.?Gebregeorgis Yohannes, San Francisco Public Library, CA
