From School Library Journal

Grade 6-9-These heavily illustrated titles encourage students to use primary-source documents and offer tips for determining their meanings and importance. Excerpts from newspaper accounts, letters, government documents, and individuals' commentary are sprinkled throughout. In the first book, Ross traces the roots of the American Revolution and covers events through the ratification of the Constitution. The final chapter, "The Impact of the Revolution," cites subsequent events and addresses well into the 20th century. While most of the information can be found in standard reference sources, readers will appreciate definitions that appear alongside the excerpts from historical documents, the maps, and the full-color reproductions of famous works of art. Unfortunately, the latter are not identified and the artists aren't listed. The title is an attractive addition, but not a first purchase. Industrial Revolution is more successful. Economic history is well defined, and the role of industrialization comes alive within the short but detailed text. Beginning in Britain, the revolution is followed and a final chapter summarizes the global effects of industrialization throughout the 20th century. Textual aids and an abundance of identified black-and-white and color art reproductions and useful maps accompany the narrative. With little on the role of economics in our world, this title is a solid resource for quick reference.
