Grade 2-4 An easy-to-read introduction to the complex world of snakes. While most of the text is accurate and not misleading, there is one glaring problem. The second page of text states, "Snakes lay eggs. Some of the babies have a tiny 'egg tooth' to help them break out of the shell. They can look after themselves right away." At the end of the book, readers are informed that some snakes are live-bearing, and they are never told that snakes don't have to have an egg tooth to look after themselves right away. The illustrations, which comprise about two-thirds of every page, are bright and eye-catching. However, a better introduction, with more text and color photos, is Broekel's Snakes (Childrens, 1982).
