Grade 6 Up-- A relatively small book with great impact. The story it tells is disturbing, not so much in recounting Nazis and their atrocities, but in showing the complicity of people, countries, and governments in knowingly sheltering these men. Four of the five chapters in this extensively researched work each deal with an individual, and the choices are intriguing: Josef Mengele, Adolf Eichmann, Klaus Barbie, and Kurt Waldheim. The remaining pivotal chapter details how the U. S. government allowed certain Germans into America despite questionable pasts because they either had scientific knowledge that the military wanted or other information deemed useful by the CIA. This is a well-written and well-researched book, with plenty of footnotes and an extensive list of books and easily accessible articles for further reading. The only flaw is really a stylistic quibble: Landau is not always consistent in her usage of dates.
