Grade 2-4-- Encouraging children to be observant of nature all around them, Kudlinski describes the telltale signs of the presence of animals and birds. Activities are suggested for finding and identifying tracks, sheddings, and scents. However, her choice of animals to observe is often far-fetched. An illustration of a few broken acorns is said to show the presence of moose. An owl pellet is described as being that of a long-eared owl, while a feather is only said to be from a bird. Morgan's full-color pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are pleasant and natural looking. However the picture showing an ant farm does not match the instructions for making one. The finished work lies somewhere between a pleasant read-aloud and a source of factual information, doing neither well. --Eva Elisabeth Von Ancken, Trinity Pawling School, NY
