The merits of Dowd's book are in its first four chapters, which provide information on determining financial planning needs and selecting a financial planner and describe the financial planning industry and planning functions. The remaining chapters are dedicated to the financial planning home plan; but, for the do-it-yourselfer, the author attempts to provide too much information in too little space. The book is not badly written and is current with recent tax law changes. Because of its currency it would be useful in a public library collection but at the stiff price of $16.95 for less than 260 pages it is no bargain. Arthur J. Lieb, Library of Congress
