Grade 4-8-- Solid series entries covering three often-overlooked chapters in American history. The Colonial Wars includes four separate conflicts between 1689-1763, which are reported in a balanced, lucid account. Carter clearly describes the various campaigns of The Mexican War . All of the books have decent maps that help readers to keep the places and events straight. Illustrations, mainly full-color reproductions of paintings, are plentiful, with one or two per double-page spread. Report writers will find plenty of well-organized, attractively presented information. On the other hand, the books fail to grip readers with the excitement of the events because the focus is on military and political strategies, with little emphasis on the experiences of common soldiers. Quotations are used, but not extensively, and most are from generals and presidents. Theodore Roosevelt's personality comes through well in The Spanish-American War , but few of the other notable personages involved come to life within the text.
