Grade 6 Up-Although Roth's intention of encouraging children to learn of the marvels of nature through detailed observation and personal investigation is admirable, his dry and convoluted style will put off most young readers. The projects are very long term, involving observations over seasons and even years. However, the greatest problem is in the objects needed to carry out some of the investigtions. A "simple waterscope" involves cutting glass and a trash container or bucket. This is not only expensive-it's not a project for young people. A more problematic project, meant to identity turtles in the wild, tells children to DRILL holes in the turtles' shells. Any kind of activity involving the mutilation of any living thing is not to be condoned. City children or even those who live in suburbia will have a great deal of trouble locating the plants, seeds, feathers, and animals that are needed for the successful completion of these activities. The illustrations are comprised of black-line drawings and some murky photographs. With a wealth of beautiful nature books available, this is one to skip.
