Grade 4-6-- A concise, cogent overview of eight major groups of invertebrates. Focusing on a different group of animals in each chapter, the text gives the scientific name of the phylum involved (the chapter on worms examines three phyla) and briefly describes the physical and behavorial characteristics common to its members. Jellyfish, sea anemones, sand dollars, octopuses, crayfish, and ants are among those included. Terms in italics are defined in the glossary. Twenty sharp, full-color photographs illustrate the text; most of their captions are general, identifing the type of animals shown but not its species. This is a broader introduction than either Bender's Invertebrates (1988) or Hemsley's Jellyfish to Insects (1991, both Watts), which focus more on the anatomy and life cycles of various invertebrates and have more illustrations, including diagrams of internal organs. The Landau title, however, provides more material on sponges and discusses ways in which animals harm or benefit humankind. Students needing a more general approach to the subject will find it useful. --Karey Wehner, San Francisco Public Library
